Poor France. The nation known mostly for its food and wine only has a few major sporting events to call its own, yet we — great, fat and lazy America — have pwned its most iconic one for seven years. That legacy could still live on — if you don’t mind shelling out $1299 and sweating all over your living room floor, that is. Powered by Google Maps and touted as the official trainer of Le Tour de France, comes a Pro-Form training bike so hardcore, it even simulates potholes. Ok, we made that last part up, but it does allow you to feel the burn of 24 pre-set courses, or one of your own punishing design. For the ultra-committed indoor enthusiast, there’s also Intelligent Wind Resistance and a 20 percent incline / decline feature that’ll match the ups and downs of real life outdoor cycling without the hassle of the actual outdoors. Honestly, it’s a bit much and we can’t really see this thing taking off with the New Year’s Eve resolution set, but if you’ve always wanted that biker’s derriere, this is your trainer.

An all natural “supercandy” ups your game with its performance-driven ingredients
snapcandy1.jpg

Recognizing that most people think about candy first and nutrition second, the just-announced line of SNAP Infusion Supercandy seeks to provide snackers with both. Each biodegradable package of candy contains a daily dose of B vitamins, antioxidants and electrolytes delivered via patented “SNAP bead” microcapsules.

There’s no pretense that these are “health” food; the creators wanted to make candy, but candy that was healthier than most. SNAP’s launching with five classic candy varieties: gum, tarts, caramels, gummies and jelly beans. Each is naturally flavored, colored and sweetened. There’s no HFCS and no trans fats. And while they still pack a calorie punch, it’s around half that of most similar treats.

snapcandy2.jpg

SNAP is the latest project of Andover, MA-based husband and wife team Eric and Andrea Stoll, well-known personalities in the athletic industry. Eric previously worked as the Marketing Director of Finnish running brand Karhu, while Andrea had senior roles at both Converse Sport and Vans. This experience helped them form the concept, marketing strategy, design and packaging for the product.

SNAP will be available in August 2011 for around $2 a pack at sports stores and natural food markets across the USA. It will also be available online at Amazon and the SNAP site.

There have been some pretty outrageous skate parks built over the last decade as skateboarding has made the leap from hoodlum pastime to legitimized sport. This Mountain Dew-sponsored Pinball Machine Skate Park in New Zealand, however, may be the most outlandish to date. Built in only 17 days for an upcoming competition, this park cost almost $500,000 to create and will remain open for only 3 weeks once the contest is over. A true replica of a pinball machine down to the lights, sounds and launcher at the beginning, this park is a dream come true for anyone who has ever been a teenage skater.

Nike Hypershox – Grey Red |

This is by far the clearest indication of what is to come from Nike and Nike Basketball. Considered by many, even many Nike insiders, to be the company’s largest gamble at the time. The Nike Shox system paid off quite handsomely in the 10 years since its inception in 2001. The basketball sector, however, have gave ways to improved Air Max and/or lighter Zoom Air units, comparative more in tune to the range of motions needed on the court. That will change later this year as Nike Basketball introduces the Nike Hypershox. A merging of 2 popular technical features, the lightweight breathable Hyperfuse upper and the new Nike Shox sole system with air-base pillars. Its unclear which player will deem this new creation to his next signature footwear though there is little doubt it will become the most popular sneakers along those playground courts. via: MarqueeSole.

Jeffrey Martin is a busy man. Having already shot an 80 gigapixel panorama of London’s skyline and a 40 gigapixel peek inside a Czech library, he has now turned his attention to England’s hallowed Wembley Stadium. The recently rebuilt home of football served as the stage for a new 360-degree panorama, shot during the FA Cup Final this Saturday, which spans 10 gigapixels in total and has been made available online at the source link below. Recording was done using a DSLR mounted to a custom robot rig that would continually pump out imagery to an equally exclusive Fujitsu workstation equipped with 192GB of RAM and 24 processing cores. All that grunt was used to automatically stitch more than 1,000 high-res images together, earning the finished product the title of world’s largest 360-degree sports panoramic photo. Give the source a bash to tag yourself if you were at the Final or to check to see who else was there.

[Thanks, Adam]

adidas Crazy Light

Today, April 14, 2011, adidas Basketball will unveil the adidas adiZero Crazy Light, the lightest shoe in basketball. How light is this shoe you ask? At 9.8 ounces, the newly-designed, revolutionary adiZero Crazy Light surpasses the Nike Zoom Kobe V and Nike Zoom Kobe VI for the lightest basketball shoe ever created. Specifically, the Crazy Light is more than 15 percent lighter than the nearest competitor, and it now gives adidas the lightest footwear in three sports including football (adiZero 5-Star cleat) and soccer (F50 adiZero cleat).

“No other basketball shoe compares to the new adiZero Crazy Light and it’s a shoe that will revolutionize the game,” said Lawrence Norman, adidas Vice President of Global Basketball. “The ultra lightweight design is built for players who want to be faster, jump higher and perform better on the court. From the NBA’s best to pick-up games across the world, players are asking for light footwear to help them become one step quicker – and the adiZero Crazy Light delivers this in a way like no shoe in history.”

The adidas Innovation Team has been developing the adiZero Crazy Light (for over two years) from the canvas of a bare foot to ensure every part of the shoe serves a vital performance function. The Crazy Light possesses a revolutionary new SPRINTWEB exoskeleton upper which is less than 1mm thick. It is bonded to a nylon textile base to shed weight and provide increased support and strength. In addition, the fusion between the SPRINTFRAME external heel counter and the TORSION SYSTEM help reduce weight and increase motion control. Each lace eyelet is load bearing and has a corresponding web spar to support players during hard cuts. As for the the upper as a whole, it is constructed of translucent nylon to further decrease weight and give players nearly 360 degrees of ventilated comfort. The adiZero Crazy Light’s traction system is thicker in high wear areas to ensure maximum grip, and less thickness in low perimeter zones like the midfoot.

Derrick Rose and other adidas brand members will debut this shoe in the 2011 NBA Playoffs.

“Lighter footwear makes you faster and speed dominates on the basketball court,” said Derrick Rose, two-time NBA All-Star of the top-seeded Chicago Bulls. “The adiZero Crazy Light is the lightest basketball shoe I’ve ever worn and it will no doubt make me faster on the court for our playoff run.”

adidas will release the adiZero Crazy Light on June 3, 2011, in four colorways for $130. Colorways include sharp blue/white, black/red/white, grey/white/neon green and red/white. Following that, adidas will release this shoe in six additional team colorways through September.

Tennis legends Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal took their long-standing rivalry to the water last weekend. The tennis champions, in Qatar for the Qatar Open, the official start of the tennis calendar, battled it out on a floating platform on a lagoon in Qatar with the city of Doha in the background. The stunt is similar to similar moves we’ve seen in Dubai, most recently AC Milan’s soccer pitch in the sky. Federer has taken part in one of these events before, playing Andre Agassi on the Burj al-Arab’s sky-high helipad.

Last year Nadal won the French Open, Wimbledon and US Open titles and on New Year’s Day, Nadal edged out Federer at Abu Dhabi’s invitational World Tennis Championships. Federer beat Dutch qualifier Thomas Schoorel at the Qatar Open with an amazing through-the-legs shot setting the stage for another potential battle.
