When the marketing team at Atlus sat down to evaluate Catherine, the company’s creepy concoction of nightmarish puzzle realms and adult relationships, it established what needed to be done in order to make the game stand out amongst the year’s other offerings: absolutely nothing. But if you’re Atlus, lasciviousness is no excuse to omit lavish special editions!

The “Love is Over Deluxe Edition” of Catherine is delivered in a “Stray Sheep” pizza box, fresh from the haunt frequented by in-game boy toy Vincent. In addition to the game, on either Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3, the special package contains a Catherine pillowcase, a large shirt depicting a depleted heart gauge, and Vincent’s boxers. (Not boxers with pictures of Vincent on them — Vincent’s dotted underwear that he removed and sent to you.)

The “Love is Over Deluxe Edition” will set you back $79.99 and will be available only in limited quantities. Pre-orders for both the regular edition and special release incur further bonuses in the form of the Atlus-obligatory 11-track music CD and a 36-page Catherine art book.

If you’re already envisioning your perfect evening — lying on that pillowcase in your new shirt and boxers, listening to the soundtrack while you flip through the art book — you might need to take your relationship with Catherine down just a notch. We You have until July 26 to modify and/or hide your obsession.

Singapore-based developer Rockmoon has created a promising game prototype using Kinect, an iPhone and the Unity engine. As seen in the video below, one player controls a spaceship while another controls a pair of gatling guns using the iPhone. It’s like Lucky and Wild meets Sewer Shark! Kind of.

Sure, a lack of first-party tools never kept you from bending the Kinect to your diabolical whim, but Microsoft’s taking some time out at MIX 11 to talk about the official Kinect SDK for Windows and show off a few demos. Mind you, all of that’s going to happen on stage over the course of the next hour, so we don’t have many details for you right now, but Redmond says devs will have access to not only the basic color and infrared depth cameras, but “robust skeletal tracking” of two simultaneous individuals as well, and perhaps most excitingly, full access to the Kinect’s array of four microphones for noise canceling and voice recognition complete with API support. Hate to say it, Kinect hackers, but the bar’s about to be bumped up. Keep it locked right here and we’ll let you know if the Microsofties reveal anything else fun!

Update: Yep, we’re getting some Kinect SDK details now — Microsoft says you’ll be able to write Kinect apps for PC in Visual Basic, C#, and C++, and they’re showing off basic coding now… with just a few minutes of work in Visual Studio, they had a program that could draw lines using the wave of a hand.

Update 2: Okay, we just saw some straight-up Minority Report fun here — a guided astronomical tour of the universe controlled by Kinect, and a motorized lounge chair! Connection permitting, we’ll have video up soon.

The Plasma Cutter replica included with the collector’s edition of Dead Space 2 is nice and all, but it doesn’t have that overboard extravagance that some people want from their video game memorabilia. Now, these full-size replicas being released next month — there’s some real, substantial money-wastin’.

The $220 replica of the Plasma Cutter from the first Dead Space, and the $240 Dead Space 2 version, are packaged in metal briefcase-style carriers, and have rechargeable batteries to power the realistic “3-blast spot” lighting. The only thing they lack is real cutting power — which is a shame, because at these prices, you’re going to wish for real life-or-death monster battles to justify the cost.

The scariest looking peripheral at CES 2011? Possibly. But for those looking to gain a split-second edge on the competition, the N-Control Avenger just may be the solution Xbox 360 gamers have been looking for. Announced just a couple of months ago, the company was here in Las Vegas to actually demonstrate a fully functional model. But simply, it straps onto your first-party 360 controller, adding triggers, straps, cables and all sorts of other contraptions that aim to give you improved alternatives to pressing buttons (while freeing your thumbs up to more accurately operate the analog joysticks). It seems so obvious: Using Kinect to help people learn American Sign Language. That’s exactly what researchers at Georgia Tech College of Computing are working on, pairing Microsoft’s oft-hacked motion sensing camera with custom software that previously required colored gloves kitted with wrist-mounted, 3-axis accelerometers. On a series of increasingly difficult tests, the software returned results with 100% accuracy, 99.98% accuracy, and 98.8% accuracy.

These promising results mean the team will be working on updates including a larger vocabulary which necessitates the need of “hand shape features.” The initial proof-of-concept demo launched with a small vocabulary that excluded them in favor of broader gestural movements with the arms and body. We imagine that reported fourfold increase in Kinect image resolution would have a major benefit here, should Microsoft ever release it.

UC Davis’s Oliver Kreylos has been responsible for two of our most impressive Kinect hacks yet. He was one of the first to get proper 3D video out of the thing, following that up by pairing up two of the cameras, one to fill in the gaps of the other. You might have thought he was just playing around but no — oh no. There was a method to the madness and his ulterior motive has been revealed: 3D telepresence. This is what he’s been working on all along and he has an early version operational, using the output from two Kinects in a remote office to beam a 3D representation of another person to his display, which he can navigate around (and through) using a Wiimote. Meanwhile, the viewer can see the position of Oliver in real-time, a virtual camera floating around and enabling them to maintain eye contact despite her not actually looking at either physical camera. That demonstration is embedded after the break along with a somewhat fanciful follow-up in which Kreylos engages in a rather… protracted lightsaber battle against the forces of evil.

It’s finally happened: They’ve come up with a way to touch virtual breasts using the Kinect sensor. ThriXXX, a company that makes (you guessed it) sex games, has announced that it’s created a Kinect hack to utilize the sensor as a control input for its “sim” games.
