Nike MAG 2011 (McFly) – Officially Unveiled

The 2011 NIKE MAG – It’s About Time. – Nike

Many proclaimed it to be the “greatest shoe never made.”. Some naysayers even gone as far as calling it “vaporware”. But all the changed this afternoon at the back lot of Universal Studios as Nike CEO Mark Parker and designer Tinker Hatfield unveiled the Nike MAG 2011. Aptly dubbed the Air McFly, or Marty McFly’s shoe, the shoe is an almost exact replica of the original movie prop in the 1989 Back To The Future II. Worn by the film’s hero, time traveler Marty McFly, played by actor Michael J. Fox, the futuristic footwear by Nike featured a auto-lacing system and electrical lighting scheme. While the Nike Air MAG 2011 will not include the auto-lacing feature, it will include the same exact silhouette and the LED glowing panels as the prop. The shoe will also be the very first footwear in Nike’s product line to have electroluminescent technology, with the ability to glow for 5 hours after each charge.

Since day one of its design phase, Nike’s been adamant about support the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. So as actor Michael J. Fox stroll onto The Late Show with David Letterman later this evening, Nike will will unveil an eBay charity site to auction off 1500 pairs of the Nike MAG, or 150 pairs per day for the next 10 days. 100% net profit will go to the Michael J. Fox Foundation directly. Furthermore, a matching donation of up to $50 million will be given by search giant Google‘s Co-Founder Sergey Brin and his wife Anne Wojcicki, a DNA specialist. The goal, as stated by Mark Parker, is the eradication of Parkinson’s Disease, which afflicts both Michael J. Fox and Brin’s late mother. The charity auction starts tonight at nikemag.eBay.com and ends on September 18th. See more renderings of the final product along with an introductory video after the jump.

Putsch Racing Batmobile

There are many Batmobile replicas in the world, but only one of them is powered by a legitimate turbine engine. Casey Putsch is the proud owner and creator of that particular beast – a Keaton-era Batmobile powered by the same Boeing turboshaft engine found in the likes of a Navy drone helicopter. Now Putsch is putting his creation up for sale, and if you’re the ultimate Batman aficionado, you’ll need this machine in your collection. You’ll also need to be fabulously wealthy, as the vehicle carries a buy-it-now price of $620,000.

Typically, this is where we rattle off the number of lust-worthy exotics you could own for the same stack of cash, but we can’t quite bring ourselves to line this machine up against the rest of the motoring world. Maybe it’s nostalgia or the fact that the Putsch’s machine pegs the awesome meter in a way few other hand-built vehicles do. Besides, what figure would you put on a one-of-a-kind, U.S. Navy-powered crime-fighting apparatus? Hit the jump to check out a video of the Batmobile in action and head over to eBay Motors to take a look at the auction.

There’s a lot of lore and misunderstanding with respect to what ‘improvising’ means with respect to filmmaking. I think there are some who take ‘improvised’ to mean that there is no script, or that actors go completely off-book when shooting a scene. And while there are a few directors who do shoot films like that — very few — most of the time improvisation on film means that an actor comes up with a new line or action in the context of a scripted scene.

Here’s a video that compiles twenty-five of the most influential unscripted moments in film. Some of these are things that weren’t in the script, but created on set between takes (supposedly Bogie’s “here’s looking at you, kid” line from Casablanca is one of those) and some are genuine spur of the moment creations.

It’s difficult to imagine The Shining being any more terrifying than its original release, but Duke Nukem has never cared much about impossible odds, and it’s taken on the challenge like a champ. Film fanatic and analyst Rob Ager has compiled a video dissecting the spatial anomalies in The Shining’s Overlook Hotel, as discovered through a Duke Nukem 3D mod attempting to recreate the building. Ager describes the impossible hallways, windows, apartments and stairways littering the Overlook that lend Kubrick’s movie a subconsciously eerie, something’s not quite right vibe.

Ager’s detailed analysis borders on crazed obsession, but it provides thrilling insight into a classic film — we just think he should take a vacation after this one. After all, all work and no play…

casey putsch turbine-powered batmobile

Turbine-powered Batmobile – Click above for image gallery

Having a real-life Batmobile in your driveway sounds like a fun idea. Upon closer inspection, however, it’s not going to be that exciting. Most often, Batmobile replicas are powered by something like a junkyard-salvaged General Motors 350, featuring an interior reminiscent of a hastily cobbled together 24 Hours of LeMons racer. A man by the name of Casey Putsch decided he wanted a Batmobile to call his own, but he wasn’t ready to settle for second-rate.

This particular Putsch is the same man behind Putsch Racing, an outfit that restores, designs and appraises all manner of items automotive. When we said that Casey Putsch wasn’t going to settle for a low-rent Batmobile, we meant it. Instead, Putsch has assembled what he says is the only turbine-powered Batmobile in the world.

Under the long hood of Putsch’s Batmobile sits a Boeing turboshaft engine plucked from a naval drone helicopter. The power output is rated at 385 horses, which is good for a vehicle that weighs around 2,800 pounds.

Besides the engine upgrade, this Batmobile has an interior that would make Bruce Wayne nod approvingly. That’s all you can hope for really, since it’s impossible to make Mr. Wayne jealous. Putsch strapped an Apple iPad into the center stack of his super(hero)car, which then acts as his avionics system and also supplies GPS information.

We have footage of Casey Putsch driving his creation available for you after the jump, which is worth it for the sound alone. We also have a handful of photos in the gallery below. Be sure to check out Todd Cooperider’s website for more information on this mad machine.

Oh, Sony — not again. We’ve just received numerous tips that Lulz Security has broken into SonyPictures.com, where it claims to have stolen the personal information of over 1,000,000 users — all stored (disgracefully) in plain text format. Lulz claims the heist was performed with a simple SQL injection — just like we saw the last time around. A portion of the group’s exploit is posted online in a RAR file, which contains over 50,000 email / password combos of unfortunate users. We’ve downloaded this file (at our own risk, mind you) and can verify these sensitive bits are now in the wild, though it remains unclear if what’s published matches reality. In addition to user information, the group has blurted out over 20,000 Sony music coupons, and the admin database (including email addresses and passwords) for BMG Belgium employees. Fresh off the heels of the PlayStation Network restoration, we’re guessing the fine folks in Sony’s IT department are now surviving solely on adrenaline shots.

[Thanks to everyone that sent this in]

When we ran the story about 3D Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy beating the opening day box office record in Hong Kong of the all-time box office champion, Avatar, it was just kind of a joke. Those of us in North American never actually thought we’d get to see the movie in theaters. But now, we just might. According to The Hollywood Reporter, China Lion Film Distribution has picked up the erotic Chinese blockbuster for North American distribution, though no release date has been set.

As previously stated, 3D Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy is a remake of a 1991 film of the same name about a sexually frustrated teacher in ancient China who gets wrapped up in the harem of a new friend. Featuring full nudity and “camouflaged lovemaking” but no actual penetration, Sex and Zen is billed as “the world’s first 3-D erotic film.” When it opened in April, it was an instant smash in Hong Kong and has continued that run of success in Australia, New Zealand and more. We’ve got more after the jump.

The Hollywood Reporter ran the news about the 3D blockbuster and said that, after it beat the opening day gross of Avatar (read about that here) it went on to basically sell-out the entire first week. Opening in Australia, the film has made over $1 million over several weeks for a per-screen average of $122,000, which is several thousand dollars more than the per-screen average of Fast Five (Fast Five is, obviously, on more screens). In New Zealand, the per-screen average was $24,000, which was neck in neck with that of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Strangers Tides. Plus, in both those countries, the film was released uncut with an R18 rating. That’s not to say it’ll get an R-rating here, but, we’ll have to see.

Exactly how wide and when will the film open in North America? Well China Lion CEO Milt Barlow said the following:

We’re looking at as wide as possible a release for this groundbreaking film in North America and are currently working with our theatrical partners AMC for the US and Toronto, Cineplex for Vancouver and Consolidated in Hawaii. Announcements are expected in the next few weeks.

While it’ll most likely be a very limited release, it could be even more limited than usual as few independent theaters are equip for 3D, unlike the multiplexes. It should be interesting to see where 3D Sex and Zen ends up. Would you go check it out?

Here’s the trailer for the film, which is directed by Christopher Sun Lap Key and stars Hara Saori, Suo Yukiko and Vonnie Liu.
